2009/2010 NKBA Student Design Competition Remodels Arts & Crafts Home

The National Kitchen & Bath Association is proud to present the 2009/2010 NKBA Student Design Competition. This year, students enrolled in kitchen and bath design programs accredited by the NKBA will be challenged to use their knowledge and skills of kitchen and bath design to remodel a 1910 Arts & Crafts “Shingle House.” The remodel challenges students to maintain the historic ambiance of the home, while adding modern conveniences.

Alexis and Cory Springer and their four children have relocated to a suburb of Portland, Oregon. The Springers are anxious to remodel their home to accommodate visiting grandparents and the active lifestyle of a family of four. The challenge is to redesign the existing kitchen to meet all the Springers’ current needs, including an area to supervise their children’s homework while cooking. After collecting wine from the many vineyards surrounding Portland, Cory would like a butler’s pantry with a temperature controlled wine cellar that can hold 60 to 100 bottles.

Students will also be remodeling a mudroom into a full bath for Grandma and Grandpa Springer to use when they visit. Students are required to design using the NKBA Planning Guidelines and draft according to NKBA Graphic and Presentation Standards.

Sponsored by American Woodmark and Sub-Zero/Wolf and judged by a panel of industry professionals, the NKBA Student Design Competition acknowledges the talent of aspiring kitchen and bath designers to plan safe, functional, and beautiful spaces that incorporate imaginative design statements and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

The winning entries in both the kitchen and bath competition will be recognized at a special ceremony held during the 2010 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show (K/BIS®) in Chicago. The winning designs will be featured in the NKBA Design Competition Winners Publication and awarded the following prizes:

First Place Kitchen $2,500 Scholarship First Place Bath $2,500 Scholarship
Second Place Kitchen $1,500 Scholarship Second Place Bath $1,500 Scholarship
Third Place Kitchen $1,000 Scholarship Third Place Bath $1,000 Scholarship

Award winners will also receive complimentary registration to K/BIS 2010, which will include the awards ceremony, two nights’ hotel stay, and transportation to the event.

Entrants must be NKBA Student Members and enrolled in a college or university on the date of postmark. Award recipients must also be current NKBA members. Except for experiences derived from an internship, entrants must neither have worked in a professional design capacity (including interior design, architecture, and related fields), nor have been paid for design services rendered. Projects entered must be completed individually by the student designer. No co-designers are permitted in the competition.

Students may enter the kitchen, bath, or both portions of the competition. Entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2009.
